The Brown County Junior Fair Board is seeking a Small Animal Superintendent.
- Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest by January 15th to Christy Clary at clary.42@osu.edu or directly to the Extension Office.
- Letters of interest should include applicable experience, subject-matter expertise, and why you feel you would be suited for the role.
- Letters will be reviewed by a committee, and applicants may be asked to attend interviews.
Below is the current Superintendent Position Description as approved by the Brown County Senior Fair Board (current as of 12.2.25); if any changes are made, they will be updated here and noted.
POSITION: Brown County Junior Fair Superintendent
This is a VOLUNTEER POSITION.
The Junior Fair Superintendent role offers an opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills while actively contributing to the planning and success of the Brown County Junior Fair. Brown County Junior Fair Superintendents are responsible for empowering the Junior Fair Board members to run and operate the department; this includes helping them develop their own skills. Individuals in this position collaborate with the Senior and Junior Fair Boards, and Junior Fair Advisory Committee to carry out key responsibilities, including:
- Oversee the operation of all Junior Fair Events and Activities for a specific department for the Brown County Fair. This includes all pre- and post-fair activities.
- Attend Junior Fair Board meetings.
- In November/December, review the rules for the Junior Fair department and assist in updating rules to meet current industry standards with advisement from the 4-H and FFA Advisors.
- Provide input to the Skillathon event as needed.
- Encourage new ideas to grow and expand the department.
- Develop communication with exhibitors throughout the year on upcoming events, key information, and rule changes. Provide said communication to the Extension Office by set deadlines to be shared with Exhibitors.
- Assign and schedule stall assignments or display locations.
- Assign tasks and communicate expectations to Assistant Superintendents.
- Supervise the junior fair board in planning and conducting the related the Junior Show or events at the fair.
- Complete all required documents regarding champions, and a copy is placed in the Junior Fair Office.
- Livestock results must also be entered in the database. Sale information must also be entered by the deadline set.
- Complete all pre-fair paperwork.
- Livestock departments will need to ensure the database is ready by the set deadline pre-fair.
- Work with junior fair board members to select awards and ensure sponsorship.
- Work closely with Junior Advisory Committee, Senior Fair Department Representative, 4-H & FFA leadership, and Junior Fair Board Membership. Accept feedback and guidance.
- Submit all department changes to the Extension Office by the set deadline.
- Communicate expectations to Junior Fair Board Members, this includes events hosted by your department where they are engaged.
- Assist with providing names of judges by set deadline or when requested.
- Department Superintendents who have projects consigned to the sale will also serve on the sale committee.
- Supervise Jr. Fair Youth on the board in operating the Jr. Fair Shows and Events, which includes empowering them to take on leadership of announcing shows and events, lining up people, organizing awards, etc.
- Understand all the rules and guidelines related to your department from the Ohio Revised Code, Senior Fair, Junior Fair, or the respective Junior Fair Organization.
Skills Required:
- Excellent communication and organization skills.
- Timely follow-up on calls, emails, or problems.
- Ability to work alongside volunteers, Junior Fair Board Members, parents, and exhibitors of all ages.
- Computer skills utilizing spreadsheets and word processing skills.
- An outgoing personality that will be the spokesperson for the Junior Fair.
- Work cooperatively with the Senior Fair Board, Junior Fair Superintendents, OSU Extension Staff, and 4-H, FFA, Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and FCCLA leadership.
